Hints On Ordering Leather Hides and leather skins
Leather being a product of nature that is processed into a finished item as opposed to a manufactured product, there are certain things that make ordering leather unique. The size, shape and condition of finished leather is somewhat dependant upon the age and condition of the animal at the time of processing.
When ordering online leather is sold in full sides, double shoulders or skins .
If you are local to us, there are leathers that we will cut for you and they can be sold by as small as a square foot of leather.
We DO NOT cut Elkskin, Deer, Exotic leathers or Hair on hides of any kind. Special order colors and leather hides are not sold as cut leather, only has full hides, double shoulders or skins.

Vegetable Tanned Tooling Leather - VegTan
Available in Import, Wickett & Craig or Hermann Oak
Process of making leather using tanning obtained from
barks, woods or other parts of trees and plants,
Most outstanding characteristics is this leather can be used to carve leather projects,
embossing leatherwork as well as tooling leathercrafts.
Leather tanned like this is used for holsters, belts, saddles,

Synthetic Wool 9064-02
The synthetic wool is a golden maize color and used for lining in leatherwork projects, it has 1-1/8" heavy weight density pile that is 60" wide for economical cutting. The synthetic wool is used by many saddlemaker's for in leather saddle repair, for a lining in breast collars and cinches. This is also a commonly used material in lining leather gun cases. Sold by the linear yard. |

Deer, Deerskin, Deer Hides
Deer Skin is a durable soft temper leather, specially tanned to be soft and flexible, yet durable.
Because deers are a game animal, deer skin is subject to holes, blemishes and scarring.
This leather is also referred to as buckskin, Frontiersmen, Native Americans (American Indians), Black Powder enthusiasts, and many other leatherworkers use this leather for leathercraft projects.
These hides average 8-10 sq ft. and are a 2.5 to 3 oz. leather.

Because hides are an irregular shape and are measured in square feet versus linear yards for fabric, this table is provided to assist you in converting from yards of fabric to square footage of leather required to upholster an article of furniture.
The figures below represent the approximate yards of 54" material and square footage of leather based on 1yd. = 18 sq ft needed to upholster the type of furniture shown.

Leather Information - Leather Weight, Thickness and Common Uses of Leather Hides and Skins
2 to 3 oz. weight 2/64" to 3/64" thickness is commonly used for molding, toolable linings, embossing.
3 to 4 oz. weight 3/64" to 4/64" thickness is commonly used for embossing, lightweight billfold backs, clutches.
4 to 5 oz. weight 4/64" to 5/64" thickness is commonly used for billfold backs, organizers, clutches.
5 to 6 oz. weight 5/64" to 6/64" thickness is commonly used for small cases and notebook covers.
6 to 7 oz. weight 6/64" to 7/64" thickness is commonly used for carved handbags, camera cases, journal covers.
7 to 8 oz. weight 7/64" to 8/64" thickness is commonly used for narrow belts, knife sheaths and small holsters.
8 to 9 oz. weight 8/64" to 9/64" thickness is commonly used for belts, holsters, saddle bags.
9 to 10 oz. weight 9/64" to 10/64" thickness is commonly used for heavier holsters and belts over 1-1/2" wide.

LEATHER TERMS DEFINED
Not sure what type of leather are you looking for... Maybe the following charts will assist you.
Leather
Leather is the tanned or dressed skin of an animal. Possessing qualities superior to any man made material.
Chrome Tanned:
Principal Method of tanning leather with a mineral agent. Chrome tanning is achieved using one or more salts of metal chromium,
which produces a soft and flexible leather ideal for use in garments, upholstery, shoe tops etc.
Finished Leather:
Leather with all processing completed. These processes can include the application of a stamped or corrective grain,
color and a final coating of any protective finish.
Flesh Side of Leather:
Under part or back of leather that was next to the meat of flesh of the animal.
Grain Side of Leather
Epidermis or outer layer of animal skins. Also refers to the outer or hair side of the skin that has been split into 2 or more thickness'
Full Grain is leather just as it is when removed from the animal, with only the hair removed.
Ounce "weight" Of Leather
This measurement is an indication of the thickness of certain kinds of leather. An ounce is of equal value to both 1/64 inch and 0.4 mm thickness.
Suede
A finished product by sanding or running the surface of leather on an emery wheel to separate the fibers in order to produce the nap or fuzz found on Suede leather.

Our Moccasin kits contain either cow suede or deer-tanned cowhide (a cow hide leather tanned to have the characteristecs of deerskin.)
